The State Press Website Review
The website I decided to take a closer look at was Statepress.com. I visit this website two to four times a day because I have made it one of my go-to websites for constant news updates. To me, the State Press is one of the best news resources for an Arizona State student, because it’s small enough that it pertains to just the ASU community, but has the resources to be reliable about national news as well. Being as I look at this website so much during the day, I realized I never really paid attention to how it was set up, until I learned how to use website technology.
I saw many things that were similar on the State Press and to the things I did to my interactive resume. The first is the table at the top that takes a visitor to different pages. I used the same table on my website. This is extremely useful, especially for the state press, because they have multiple publications and cover two major subjects; News and sports. One thing I did like about how the state press groups its different categories is how they put their news and main topics right next to their name in big lettering and then subjects, such as, job opportunities and advertising the place at the top in the corner of the page so they are visible but not the main attraction. Another thing I like about how they separate their news subject is the way they have each subject’s most read stories on the homepage circulating a slideshow of pictures. This also simplifies the way a visitor finds their news.
There are many things that the State Press has done well in their website that I would use whenever I build another website. The different boxes that hold headline news and pictures that are redirected to news articles make the website a lot more interactive for their visitors. The pictures that link you to an article are especially interesting to me. I believe if I make a box to add a picture and then html the link to the picture, the picture would upload as a link. This would be easier on wordpress than on dreamweaver. One other aspect I really enjoy about the State Press’ Website is how they have their top 5 most viewed and searched for articles in a box. This is constantly being updated as more people visit the website. I believe this tool make the website very interactive for the State Press’ different visitors.
One thing I would change about this website is how much they show the same content in their homepage. They have about four different sections with the same story headlining each section. If I were to change this I would make it so that there weren’t so many of the same sections. I would also probably add a couple more still photographs on the homepage. Therefore the homepage would be more visual, and even if it was the same headlining a visitor would atleast be able to see a different view.
